Who can sponsor who?
A Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident who is 18+ can sponsor the following family members:
- Biological parents
- Biological grandparents
- Spouse/Common-Law/Conjugal Partner
- Dependent children under 22 years old ( unless they have mental or physical disabilities), and must be single
- Biological grandchildren
- Adopted child
- Nephew/niece if they are orphaned, under 18 years old and single
- Siblings under 18 years old, orphaned, and single
- Half-siblings under 18 years old, orphaned, and single
-All family members to be sponsored must undergo a medical examination.
-All accompanying and non-accompanying family members of the principal applicant (including children in the full custody of former spouses) must be declared and examined. If not declared and examined, they cannot be sponsored later.
-Suppose the sponsor does not have any living relative who could be sponsored and does not have any relative who is a Canadian Citizen (CC), Permanent Resident (PR), or registered Indian. In that case, they can sponsor any relative regardless of age or relationship.
-Spousal relationships must be legally proved via legal and valid marriage certificates, joint leases, bills, photographs, …etc.
-Partners must have lived together in a conjugal relationship for at least 12 months.
Sponsor Requirements:
- 18 years of age or older
- Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident
- Sign an undertaking promising to provide for the basic requirements of the sponsored person(s)
- Sign an agreement with the sponsored person
- Meet the LICO for the last 12 months
Restrictions
- Receiving social assistance for a reason other than disability
- Bankruptcy
- Subject to a removal order
- Convicted of a violent crime or sexual offense
- Detained in jail or any penitentiary or reformatory or prison
- Did not include the relative to sponsor on own PR application
- Previously sponsored as a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner who became PR less than 3 years ago
- Previously sponsored as a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner who became PR less than 5 years ago
